How to choose the best boots for the outdoors

For good reason people are consistently wanting to know what boots I wear during outdoor activities.  THAT is a hard questions to answer.  I have several pairs of boots.  In Kentucky the weather varies greatly from season to season.   I do not know how you could stay comfortable without boots for the seasons.  I believe you could easily get by with two pairs.  One for cold and one for hot weather.  With that said I have several different boots that i wanted to bring to your attention.  In this blog piece I wanted to detail the pros and cons of each, where they are manufactured and approximate price.   You will see more information as well as pictures and videos of each in the clip below.

Wolverine, 8″ hunting boot, Made in China, ~$140

  • Pros- comfortable, thinsulate keeps feet warm, laces easily, Goretex works well
  • Cons – Tongue makes it hard to get foot in, very little arch support, lug pattern holds mud

Danner, 5″ hiker, Made in China, $150

  • Pros – Outside is tough, great stitching, very strong toe box, rigid sole
  • Cons – Sole broke at ball of foot on both shoes after not much use

Tactical Research, 8″ tactical “tennis shoe boot”, Made in China, ~$130

  • Pros – VERY comfortable, great lugs shed mud, feet do not get hot in warm weather
  • Cons – not much support, doesn’t keep out water

Danner, 8″ USMC combat, Made in USA, ~$300.00

  • Pros – Comfortable, hearty, pliable upper, great toe box and heel box, Goretex
  • Cons – Heavy, Dang that price!

Muk, 8″, Chore Boot, Made in China, ~$100

  • Pros – Keeps feet extremely dry, warm, best heel box to remove rubber boots I have seen
  • Cons – Feet can get sweaty with lots of activity, NOT a good hiking boot

Merrel, 5″, Hiker, Made in China, ~$120

  • Pros – Very comfortable, toe box protection, breathable goretex works well
  • Cons – get debris in them when scrambling

As I state in the video, this was not designed to be a specific make and model review but rather and overview of several different model types and some aspects of each. If you have further questions about any of these, please do not hesitate to put your question on the comments of the video on youtube, or in the comments section of this blog below.

Come on, join in, let’s learn together!
