How to sharpen a knife

It is no secret that most survivalists feel as if their knife is the MOST important tool to have in their kit.  I 100% agree with this mindset.  Furthermore, we all know that a dull knife is the most dangerous knife you can have.  It is much more important to have an extremely sharp knife and carry and utilize it properly than to have a dull one.  A dull knife will require you to use more pressure or effort with it, which also increases the chances for risk.

What is the best method to sharpen a knife?  I would submit that whatever way works for you to get your knife sharp.  Some tools you will use to help sharpen a knife are stupid proof (perfect for me).  Others require a bit of finesse.  All joking aside I use some of each.

In the following video I show you how to use three common knife sharpeners.  Also included in these brief descriptions are amazon links so you can get your own.  These range in price from about $8 up to about $25.  I have used one of these three styles of sharpening devices for nearly 40 years now.   The stones have lasted that entire time.  The others have been replaced over the years.

  • The first is simply a handheld V sharpener.  Inside the sharpening portion of this device is a small ceramic stone that can be removed and replaced.   This is a great option for very quick sharpening.  They are incredibly inexpensive, and you can find them most anywhere.  Here is an amazon link to the one in this video.
  • The second is a folding diamond impregnated knife sharpener.  I have carried one of these in my kits for years.  I cannot recommend them enough.  They are compact, work great and last quite a while.   Here is an amazon link to the one in the video
  • The last one (actually it is two) is a an Arkansas wet stone.  I have had that one nearly my entire life as it was a gift from my parents when I was a kid.  Also the same time I was taught how to sharpen a knife.  If i was going to buy a new one today.  I would get one of these new tri-stone setups…Nice way to have multiple stones in a handy sharpening stand.

I certainly hope it helps.  There are many different methods out there that work for sharpening,  you should try them and see what works best for you.  The ones I demonstrated and utilized in this video are the ones that work best for those that are new to it.  (We sometimes do some knife sharpening in our survival classes)  However you might find out something else works for you.

As always, come on, join in, let’s learn together!
