Ideal spot to set up for camping or survival shelter

We spend a great deal of time in survival training paying attention to the sun and how it affects us for warmth.  With good reason, a nice warm sunny day in the middle of a cold environment can make for a nice bonus for gaining warmth.  Another one, that is often overlooked is not necessarily getting warm, but staying warm.

What I am referencing is how very important it is to get out of the wind so it does not blow away the warmth of your setup.  Some simple considerations are as follows:

  • Setup on the side of a hill, opposite the prevailing winds.
  • Use tree or other vegetative structure, to keep winds off of  you.
  • Always place your tarp setups with the back against the prevailing winds.
  • Reverse all of these if you are in hot conditions and need air to help cool you down.

In the following video, I came across and ideal location while I was out in the woods making videos recently.  This particular spot can be found in new growth forests where you have logging roads in and out of an area.  This sort of spot is ideal for keeping the wind off of you.
